Chapter 1 • About TCP/Connect II TCP/Connect II® for Macintosh is a versatile software package for the Apple® Macintosh® that offers connectivity tools such as terminal emulation, file transfer, electronic mail, and USENET news. It implements several TCP/IP-based protocols including telnet, the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). TCP/Connect II is available in four different editions.   This manual is written for users who are familiar with basic Macintosh operations. If you do not understand basic interface concepts, such as using the mouse, opening files, or copying files, please refer to the user guide that was included with your Macintosh.   Please complete the pre-addressed, postage-paid registration card included in your TCP/Connect II package and return it to InterCon Systems. Registering your copy of TCP/Connect II for Macintosh entitles you to notifications of upgrades, product announcements, and technical support. Support and product upgrades are included for 90 days, and are verified by your product serial number. For information on support and upgrades after this period, contact the InterCon Sales Department at 1.800.468.7266 (1.800.INTRCON), or by email at sales@intercon.com. 1.1 What You Need This section covers the basic requirements of TCP/Connect II for Macintosh. 1.1.1 Hardware This section describes the basic hardware requirements of TCP/Connect II for Macintosh. TCP/Connect II requires the following hardware: • A Macintosh SE or later model • 5 megabytes of RAM • An appropriate connection to your TCP/IP network if you plan to use TCP/Connect II on a network. This includes LocalTalk, Ethernet, Token Ring, Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), or Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI). 1.1.2 Software This section describes the basic software requirements of TCP/Connect II for Macintosh. TCP/Connect II requires the following software: • Macintosh System Software You must have version 7 or later. InterCon strongly recommends that you use the most recent system version available. • Hardware Drivers If you are using an Ethernet device, install the driver software provided by the manufacturer and select the proper settings in the Network configuration panel.   Hardware drivers are not required for serial connections or if you are using TCP/Connect II without a network connection.   See Section 2.6, Using the Network Configuration Panel , for more information. • Server Software To use electronic mail, the following are required on your server computer: • A Post Office Protocol (POP2 or POP3) server OR • An SMTP server on your Macintosh To use news, the following is required on your server computer: • A Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) server ≈≈≈≈≈≈
